WATER

February 28, 2008

The Mary and Burrum Rivers and Tinana Creek are the basis of our current and future regional economic growth; we must have a secure and guaranteed water supply to cope with the predicted growth for the region.

The Mary River is currently under threat form the Traveston Dam project , which is designed to allocate any surplus water from the Mary system to Brisbane to ensure SEQ has a secure and guaranteed water to supply to underpin  their predicted regional growth .

The new Fraser Coast Regional Council will be a powerful regional force capable of ensuring that the regions water requirements are met first.

We will not have economic prosperity for the region if our supply is under threat from the State government’s political whims.

I have taken the fight to protect our regional interests to the steps of George st and Canberra and I will continue to do so should I be elected or not.

We must create a Fraser Coast Regional Water supply strategy which uses many types of water provision:

  • Adequate environmental flows for our coastal systems.
  • Sustainable allocation from our rivers and Aquifers.
  • Water Tank subsidies.
  • Recycled treated water supply to industry.
  • Artificial wetlands treatment for 5 star repotable use.
  • Emergency desalination systems.
  • Encouragement of stormwater harvesting for all new residential developments.
  • Aquifer recharge of treated water.

The entire economic system of the Fraser Coast is totally dependent on our riverine systems, they underpin the tourism , agricultural , industrial and residential economies, we the people of the Fraser Coast Region must have the power to decide how much water is used , who uses that water and where that water is used , not the state government or private corporations.

The effects of climate change may have significant impacts on our future supply needs, the people of the Fraser Coast need to be involved in a community consultation process to help create the policies and strategies which will help us cope with any possible threats.

Public consultation did not occur for Traveston Dam  but it must occur within the Fraser Coast Council , I will fight very hard to ensure that the people of the Fraser Coast have that opportunity.
